The Art of Being Serious

The debut album by Ernst contains musical adaptations of poems by  William Blake, Christina Rosetti and William Shakespeare and unconventional coversongs of Mozart and Roy Orbison.

Did you know that...

... ERNST has respect for the past?
In the course of history a lot of beautiful texts have been written. Words, phrases and poems that, even though they are hundreds of years old, can still cut through the soul like a razorblade.

ERNST: "William Blake, Christina Rossetti, William Shakespeare ... When you hear their names, you don't immediately think of modern music. And that's bizarre. When you take a closer look at their creations, you’ll notice that their poems were almost destined to become popsongs". That’s why Ernst set Sonnet 71 (Shakespeare), Unmindful of the Roses (Rossetti) and A Divine Image (Blake) to music.

...  ERNST is honoring its heroes on this record?
Jazz, blues, pop or classical music. The members of ERNST are musical omnivores. Ernst: "When selecting the material for our album, we were guided by our emotions. Songs or poems were only considered for an ERNST-remake if they could move us".  That's why 'Parto parto ma tu ben mio' by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and 'She's a Mystery to Me' by Roy Orbison(*) feature on the album. "At first glance Mozart and Orbison seem miles apart. But they are not. Both artists had the talent to capture the pain of an aching heart into haunting melodies. And that’s why they deserve a tribute".

... ERNST is the Belgian word for ‘serious’?
“When we told people we wanted to make modern popsongs based on old poetry, they asked us if we were joking”, says Ernst. “Every time we countered their remark with the sentence: ‘No! We are serious’. And because the Belgian word for ‘seriousness’ is ‘ernst’, coming up with a bandname was fairly easy.”
